ABOUT

Marylhurst University was a private institution that focused on business and applied liberal arts. It was located in Marylhurst, Oregon. The year 1897 marked the presentation of the institution's first degree, making it one of the state's most senior degree-granting colleges and universities. St. Mary's College, which would later become Marylhurst University, was originally established and operated by the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary. On the Willamette River, approximately nine miles south of Portland, Oregon, sits the grounds of the former campus. Marylhurst University was founded as a Roman Catholic institution; however, it welcomed and educated students of all faiths and ethnicities. The university provided bachelor's degree completion programmes in a variety of liberal arts and business fields, as well as graduate degrees in fields such as business and nonprofit administration, food systems and society, teaching, art therapy counselling, divinity and applied theology, and interdisciplinary studies, among other areas of study. Marylhurst University of Liberal Arts was the first institution of its kind for women to be established in the Pacific Northwest when it was founded in 1893. At the conclusion of the summer of 2018, the institution ceased operations. It was stated that declining enrolment was the primary cause, with enrollment having decreased from 1,409 to 743 in just four years, beginning in the fall of 2013 and ending in the fall of 2017. The number of students enrolled at the institution reached an all-time high of approximately 2,000 in the middle of the Great Recession, which lasted from 2007 to 2009. However, prior to the school's closing, the teachers at Marylhurst actively contested this story.
