Boulder, Colorado is home to the prestigious Naropa University, a private institution of higher education. It was established in 1974 by Tibetan Buddhist teacher Chogyam Trungpa, and its name honours an Indian Buddhist sage who lived during the 11th century and served as an abbot at Nalanda. The university does not identify as being Buddhist; rather, it describes itself as Buddhist-inspired, ecumenical, and nonsectarian. Meditation is one of the non-traditional activities that Naropa encourages its students to participate in as an adjunct to more conventional instructional methods. In 1988, the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools granted regional accreditation to Naropa University, making it the first academic institution in the United States with a Buddhist-inspired curriculum to be granted such accreditation. It continues to be one of a very small number of schools of this kind. The Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics at the university has been responsible for bringing a number of Beat poets to the campus in recent years.
