Emporia State University, also known simply as ESU, is a public institution of higher learning that can be found in Emporia, Kansas, in the United States. Emporia State Institution is the third-oldest public university in the state of Kansas. It was initially established in March 1863 under the name Kansas State Normal School. The Kansas Board of Regents oversees a total of six different public colleges, including Emporia State University. Through its four colleges and schools, the university grants degrees in more than eighty fields of study. These are the School of Business, the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, the School of Library and Information Management, and The Teachers College. The intercollegiate athletic teams for men at Emporia State University are referred to as the Hornets, while the ones for women are referred to as the Lady Hornets. Since 1991, Emporia State has been a member of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA), which allows the school to play at the Division II level of the NCAA. Since it first competed in the NCAA Division II in 1991, the Lady Hornets basketball team has been the only one to emerge victorious and claim an NCAA title.
