The Eastern Michigan Institution campus is located in Ypsilanti, Michigan, and it is a public research university. In 1849, it was formed as the Michigan State Normal School. At the time, it was the fourth normal school to be created in the United States and the first American normal school to be founded anywhere other than New England. The Michigan State Normal School was the first normal school in the United States to provide a four-year education programme when it opened its doors in 1899. In 1959, the normal school transitioned into a university and received the name it is known by today, Eastern Michigan University. According to the Carnegie Classification system, the university is a "R2: Doctoral Universities – High Research Activity" institution. It is run by an eight-person board of regents, all of whom are appointed to their positions by the governor of Michigan for terms that last for eight years each. The university is composed of a total of eight colleges and schools, including a School of Music & Dance, an Honors College, a College of Business, a College of Education, a College of Health and Human Services, a College of Technology, and a College of Education. In addition, there is a Graduate School. The location of the university includes an academic campus as well as an athletic campus, and it covers a total area of nearly 800 acres (3.2 km2) and contains more than 120 buildings. More over 16,000 students currently attend Eastern Michigan University. Since 1991, athletes at Eastern Michigan University have been referred to as "Eagles," and in 1994, the university formally selected Swoop as the school mascot. The student-athletes of Eastern Michigan University are known as the Eastern Michigan Eagles, and they compete in the NCAA Division I Mid-American Conference.
