ABOUT

Limerick, Ireland is home to a public research university called the University of Limerick (UL), which was established in 1845. It was established in 1972 as the National Institute for Higher Education, Limerick, and in 1989, in compliance with the University of Limerick Act 1989, it transitioned into the status of a university. It was the first university to be created in Ireland after the country gained its independence in 1922, and it was followed later that same day by the founding of Dublin City University. The University of Limerick has a campus in Plassey, County Limerick, which is located 5 kilometres (3.1 miles) from the city centre. The campus spans both the north bank and the south bank of the River Shannon and encompasses a total area of 137.5 hectares (340 acres), with 46 hectares (110 acres) on the north bank and 91.5 hectares (226 acres) on the south bank. It has more than 11,000 undergraduate students enrolled full-time, including more than 2,400 students from other countries, and it also has 1,500 students enrolled part-time. The institution is home to more than 1,300 postgraduate students who are enrolled in classes in addition to the more than 800 postgraduate researchers. It was the first programme of its kind in Ireland, and its co-operative education (often known as "co-op") programme allows students to complete a work placement of up to eight months as part of their degree.
