The Athlone Institute of Technology was a technological institute that could be found in Athlone, which is located in Ireland. When it first opened its doors in 1970, the site of the institute could be found on University Road. An announcement was made regarding the formation of a consortium that would include both it and the Limerick Institute of Technology in order to establish a technological university. The AIT-LIT Consortium made the announcement on November 23, 2020, that the Limerick-Athlone IT joint application for technological university (TU) status had been filed for approval, and that the approval had been received in May of 2021. The institute of technology was formally shut down on July 16, 2021, and it was replaced by the Technological University of the Shannon: Midlands Midwest on October 1, 2021. The university's first day of classes was October 1.
