With 23,196 undergraduate and 2,983 graduate students enrolled in 2021–2022, the University of California, Santa Barbara (UC Santa Barbara or UCSB) is a public land-grant research university in Santa Barbara, California. It is a member of the 10 university system of the University of California. UCSB is the third-oldest undergraduate school in the University of California system, behind UCLA and UC Berkeley, with roots dating back to 1891 as an independent teachers' college. UCSB joined the University of California system in 1944. UC Santa Barbara is comprised of three undergraduate colleges (College of Letters and Science, College of Engineering, and College of Creative Studies), two graduate schools (Gevirtz Graduate School of Education and Bren School of Environmental Science & Management), and more than 200 degrees and programmes. It is situated on a former Marine air station from World War II. The institution is home to 10 national research centres, including the Center for Control, Dynamical Systems, and Computation and the Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics. Numerous organised research units (ORUs) at UCSB conduct studies in a range of fields, including marine science, evolutionary psychology, and neuroscience. In fiscal year 2018, UC Santa Barbara spent $235 million on research and development, placing it 100th in the US, according to the National Science Foundation. In 1995, UCSB was elected to the Association of American Universities and ranked as the third-ranked host on the ARPAnet. There are 39 members of the National Academy of Sciences, 27 members of the National Academy of Engineering, and 34 members of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences among the current UCSB faculty. There is also one Fields Medalist and six Nobel Prize winners. UCSB is categorised as a Public Ivy and falls under the category of "R1: Doctoral Universities - Very High Research Activity." Two Academy and Emmy Award winners, the winners of the Millennium Technology Prize, the IEEE Medal of Honor, the National Medal of Technology and Innovation, and the laureate of the Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics are all on the faculty.
