In Los Angeles, California, there is a public research institution called the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). The academic foundations of UCLA date back to 1881, when it was founded as a teachers college under the name of the southern branch of the California State Normal School (now San José State University). This institution is the second-oldest of the ten-campus University of California system, having been incorporated into UCLA in 1919 as the Southern Branch of the University of California (after UC Berkeley). About 31,600 undergraduate and 14,300 graduate and professional students are enrolled in UCLA's 337 undergraduate and graduate degree programmes, which cover a wide range of academic fields. UCLA was the most applied-to university in the country for Fall 2021 with 168,000 undergraduate candidates, including transfers. The College of Letters and Science and 12 professional schools make up the university's organisational structure. The Herb Alpert School of Music, School of Nursing, Luskin School of Public Affairs, and School of Theater, Film, and Television are the six institutions that provide undergraduate degree programmes. The other two institutions are the School of the Arts and Architecture and the Samueli School of Engineering. The David Geffen School of Medicine, School of Dentistry, and Fielding School of Public Health are three additional graduate-level institutions for professional health sciences. The university is completed by the Anderson School of Management, School of Law, and School of Education & Information Studies. One of the nation's Public Ivies, UCLA consistently ranks among the top colleges in the world according to reputable college and university rankings. As of October 2021, 27 Nobel laureates, five Turing Award winners, two U.S. Air Force Chief Scientists, and one Fields Medalist were faculty, researchers, or alumni at UCLA. The current faculty includes 167 members of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, 32 members of the National Academy of Engineering, 41 members of the National Academy of Medicine, and 55 members of the National Academy of Sciences.  In 1974, the college was chosen to join the Association of American Universities.  In the Pac-12 Conference, UCLA student-athletes compete as the Bruins. Only Stanford University has won more NCAA team championships (128 total), with the Bruins' 119 victories. A total of 410 Bruins have qualified for the Olympic Games and have collected 270 medals, including 136 gold, 71 silver, and 63 bronze.  With one exception (1924), UCLA has competed in every Olympics since the university's foundation, and since 1932, the United States has sent a gold medalist to every Olympics.
