ABOUT
Pierce College, also known as Los Angeles Pierce College, is a public community college that is located in the Woodland Hills neighbourhood of Los Angeles, California. Accreditation was granted by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges, and the institution can be found within the Los Angeles Community College District. Each semester, it provides services to 22,000 students. On September 15, 1947, the college opened its doors with 70 students enrolled and 18 instructors on staff. When it was first established, the institution was known as the Clarence W. Pierce School of Agriculture, and its primary areas of study included agriculture and animal husbandry. Nine years later, in 1956, the institution was renamed to Los Angeles Pierce Junior College. This was done in order to honour the institution's founder, Dr. Pierce, and to honour his dedication to the study of agriculture and veterinary medicine. (Pierce still operates a working farm that spans 225 acres (91 ha) for the purpose of providing hands-on instruction.)
Los Angeles Pierce College is not ranked in the traditional sense, as it is a community college and not a university. However, it does have a strong reputation for providing quality education and preparing students for transfer to four-year colleges or for entry into the workforce. Some of the factors that contribute to its positive reputation include:
- High graduation rate: About 60% of students graduate within six years.
- Strong transfer programs: LAPC has transfer agreements with over 50 universities, including UCLA, USC, and UC Berkeley.
- Affordable tuition: LAPC is one of the most affordable colleges in the Los Angeles area.
- Small class sizes: Students receive more personalized attention from their professors.
- Diverse student body: LAPC welcomes students from all backgrounds and walks of life.
