AMERICAN FILM INSTITUTE

The American Film Institute, also known simply as the AFI, is a film organisation based in the United States that is not-for-profit and serves the purpose of preserving the history of the motion picture arts in the country. AFI is sustained by private funds in addition to the membership dues paid by the general public. The institute's membership includes influential figures from the film, entertainment, and business worlds, as well as the academic world. The organisation is guided by the board of trustees, which is chaired by Kathleen Kennedy, and the board of directors, which is chaired by Robert A. Daly. The President and Chief Executive Officer of the organisation is film historian Bob Gazzale. Previous directors included George Stevens Jr., who served as the organization's founding director from 1967 until 1980, and Jean Picker Firstenberg. Both of these individuals served until 1980. (from 1980 to 2007).
