TRINITY WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY

In Washington, D.C., there is a private university called Trinity Washington University. Trinity University is a comprehensive institution with five schools; the undergraduate College of Arts & Sciences continues to fulfill its initial purpose as a women's liberal arts college, while men enroll in the other schools at both the graduate and undergraduate levels. As the first Catholic liberal arts college for women in the country, Trinity College was established by the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur in 1897. On August 20, 1897, a Congress Act established Trinity. The college, which had formerly been a prestigious institution, was experiencing dwindling enrollment by the 1980s. It made the decision to start recruiting local underprivileged youngsters, and the majority of the pupils were black and Hispanic. In 2004, Trinity was renamed Trinity Washington University.
