Howard Institution (Howard or simply HU) is a historically black research university in Washington, D.C. It is a private federally authorised historically black research university. It is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education and is designated as "R2: Doctoral Universities - High Research Activity." Howard, which dates back to 1867, has always been nonsectarian and welcoming to persons of all sexes and races. More than any other historically black college and university (HBCU) in the US, it provides undergraduate, graduate, and professional degrees in over 120 disciplines.
