ABOUT
In Washington, D.C., there is a private research institution called The George Washington University (GW or GWU). The main institution of higher learning in the District of Columbia is George Washington University, which was established in 1821 by the US Congress. In his first State of the Union address in 1790, George Washington, the first President of the United States, pushed for the creation of a national university in the nation's capital and continued to do so up until his assassination. Washington bequeathed Potomac Company stock to the institution as part of his estate plan. Baptist preachers gathered money on their own, though, as a result of the company's financial difficulties. One of only five universities in the country with a Congressional charter, Columbian University was founded by an Act of Congress on February 9, 1821, first as Columbian College and then as Columbian University. The undergraduate and graduate programmes at the university are offered by the Corcoran School of the Arts and Design, the Elliott School of International Affairs, the George Washington University School of Business, the School of Media and Public Affairs, the Trachtenberg School of Public Policy and Public Administration, and the Columbian College of Arts and Sciences. The International Monetary Fund, the World Bank, and the White House are all within a few blocks of GWU's main campus in Foggy Bottom, which is situated in the centre of Washington, D.C. The National Security Archive and the Institute for International Economic Policy are only two of the many research institutions that are housed at GWU. Additionally, GWU includes two satellite campuses: the Virginia Science and Technology Campus in Loudoun County, Virginia, and the Mount Vernon campus, which is situated in the Foxhall district of Washington, D.C. R1: Doctoral Universities - Very High Research Activity is how GWU is categorised. The institution enrols approximately 11,000 undergraduate and 15,500 graduate students and provides degree programmes in seventy-one specialties. At GWU, there are several opportunities for student life, a vibrant Greek community, and more than 450 additional student organisations. The NCAA Division I Atlantic 10 Conference is where the school's athletic teams, the George Washington Colonials, compete. Additionally, GWU hosts a large number of political gatherings every year, including the annual meetings of the World Bank and International Monetary Fund. 16 foreign heads of state or governments, 28 senators, 27 governors, 18 members of the U.S. Cabinet, five Nobel laureates, two Olympic medalists, two Oscar winners, and a Golden Globe winner are among the alumni, faculty, and associates of the university. GWU is one of the main feeder institutions for the diplomatic corps and has over 1,100 active graduates working in the U.S. Foreign Service.
