ABOUT
Gallaudet University is a private research university in Washington, District of Columbia, that was chartered by the federal government to educate deaf and hard of hearing students. It first opened its doors in 1864 as a grammar school for children who were either deaf or blind. It was the world's first school for the advanced education of the deaf and hard of hearing, and it is still the only institution of higher education in which all of the programmes and services are specifically designed to accommodate students who are deaf or hard of hearing. Hearing students are allowed to attend the graduate school, and each year, a select few hearing students are also allowed to enrol in the undergraduate programme. Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet, a prominent figure in the development of educational opportunities for the deaf, inspired the naming of the university after him. American Sign Language (ASL) and written English are both used for instruction and communication among students, faculty, and staff at Gallaudet University, which is officially recognised as a bilingual institution. There are no specific ASL proficiency requirements for admission to undergraduate programmes; however, many graduate programmes require various degrees of knowledge of the language as a prerequisite for enrollment. It is categorised as an R2 university, which stands for "Doctoral Universities – High Research Activity.
