TRANSYLVANIA UNIVERSITY

In Lexington, Kentucky, there is a private institution called Transylvania University. It was Kentucky's first university and was established in 1780. The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools has granted it accreditation, and it offers 46 major programs in addition to dual-degree engineering programs. By 1859, 8,000 physicians had graduated from its medical program. The university was established in the densely forested region of western Virginia known as the Transylvania Colony, which existed for a brief period between 1775 and 1776 in south and western Kentucky. The term Transylvania, which translates from Latin as "across the woods," comes from this location. Transylvania has produced a significant number of American leaders, including two U.S. vice presidents, two U.S. Supreme Court justices, 50 U.S. senators, 101 U.S. representatives, 36 U.S. governors, 34 U.S. ambassadors, and the Confederate president.
