The Greenwich Village neighbourhood of Lower Manhattan in New York City is home to the private art and design institution that is formally known as the Parsons School of Design but is more commonly referred to simply as Parsons. It is one of The New School's five colleges and has its own campus. Alongside the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the Rhode Island School of Design, Parsons is consistently ranked as one of the top three art and design schools in the United States (RISD). Parsons was the first institution of its kind in the country to offer programmes in fashion design, advertising, interior design, and communication design. It was established in 1896 by William Merritt Chase as The Chase School with the intention of encouraging the artistic expressions of individuals. In addition, it provides undergraduate and graduate degree programmes in a variety of areas of art and design, including architectural design, the history of design, art history, fine art, curatorial studies, illustration, design and technology, data visualisation, product design, as well as strategic design and management. Both the school's Master of Arts in History of Design and Curatorial Studies programme, which is offered in collaboration with the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum, and its Graduate Fellowship programme in impact entrepreneurship, which is supported financially by the Kauffman Foundation, have earned the institution widespread acclaim.
