The public university system that serves the city of New York is known as the City University of New York. It has 25 campuses, including eleven senior colleges, seven community colleges, and seven professional schools, making it the largest urban university system in the United States. Although some of its constituent colleges date as far back as 1847, the City University of New York was not founded until 1961. The institution has a total enrollment of about 275,000 students, and its alumnae and alumni have been awarded a total of thirteen Nobel Prizes and twenty-four MacArthur Fellowships.
