ABOUT

Sarasota, Florida is home to the public liberal arts college that is known as New College of Florida. It was established in 1960 as a private institution and initially went by the name New College. After being a part of the University of South Florida for a number of years, it transitioned into an independent college in 2001, becoming the eleventh independent institution to be a part of the Florida State University System. After the institution gained its independence, it changed its name to what it is known as today: New College of Florida. The school is distinguished by its unique "contract system," in which students are not given grades but rather written evaluations and agree to semester-long contracts in which they must pass a certain number of classes. For instance, in a contract with the terms "three out of five," a student who did not pass two classes would not be held accountable, but a student who did not pass three classes would be at risk of failing the entire semester and losing all of their credits. The system was designed to encourage academic experimentation and to foster curiosity about a wide variety of topics that fall outside of one's typical field of study. Students at New College are required to successfully complete an undergraduate thesis project and a baccalaureate exam. During the baccalaureate exam, students present and defend their projects in front of a faculty committee. Students at the undergraduate level complete a career education plan consisting of a series of steps that integrates professional growth with their academic experience. Students collaborate with a personal career coach and a faculty sponsor to engage in experiential learning opportunities that complement their academic coursework. These opportunities may include professional internships, undergraduate research, community service, and other similar activities. Only 675 students were enrolled at New College during the upcoming semester of the Florida State University System, making it the institution with the smallest student body by a wide margin.
