FLORIDA POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY

Lakeland, Florida is home to the public campus of Florida Polytechnic University, also known simply as Florida Poly. It was founded in 2012 as a self-governing university, making it the most recent establishment to join the State University System of Florida's 12 total schools. It is the only public polytechnic institution in the state and its main mission is to educate students in the STEM fields. The institution's roots can be traced back to a campus that was established as a satellite location of the University of South Florida in 1988. In 2008, the state of Florida granted permission for the construction of a second campus at the same institution, which at the time was known as the University of South Florida Polytechnic. The plans to turn the Lakeland institution into an independent school were launched by the Florida Legislature in the year 2012, and this was followed by the dissolution of the USF branch campus. The first day of classes at Florida Polytechnic University were held on August 25, 2014, with a total enrollment of 554 students. Florida Poly dwells on a 170-acre campus. A 3-D printing lab, a cyber gaming and media lab, a cyber security lab, a robotics lab, and a big data lab are all located in the university's Innovation, Science and Technology (IST) Building, which was created by the architect Santiago Calatrava. Additionally, Florida Polytechnic University is the first university in the world to have a campus library that is entirely digital.
