  • What is GRE?

Graduate Records Examination (GRE), is a universally standardized examination and is a pre-requisite to obtain admission into Graduate schools in the United States of America. It was established by the Carnegie Foundation in 1936. The GRE is administered by the Educational Testing Service.

  • Why is GRE required?

GRE is the assessment of the test taker’s critical thinking, analytical writing, verbal reasoning, and quantitative reasoning skills. Hence, the purpose of taking GRE is to confirm the candidate’s level of performance in the said category of skills sets. 

  • Who should take GRE?

GRE is an admission test that should be taken by students who aspire to pursue a graduate or post-graduate (doctoral) program from a university or college in the United States of America.

  • What is the eligibility for GRE?

To be an eligible candidate for GRE, one should have completed a 10 + 2 + 3 or 4 years of basic education or a graduate degree from a recognized university. 

  • Is the GRE difficult?

Though the test is popularly known to be tough, only few sections in GRE can be described as moderately-difficult and it is possible to achieve high scores with good preparation.

  • What is the pattern and syllabus of GRE?

The GRE General Test has three main segments: 

  • Analytical Writing 
  • Verbal Reasoning
  • Quantitative Reasoning

GRE is a computer-based test that is conducted in the centers in the USA and in most other countries. 

  • Analytical Writing’ is the first segment. The candidate has to select 1 topic out of 2 given topics and write a comprehensive essay on the same.  Analytical segment has 1 section with 2 separately timed tasks. 

In the ‘Verbal Reasoning’ segment, there are 3 types of questions: 

  • Sentence equivalence
  • Text completion
  • Reading comprehension

There are 2 sections in this segment with approximately 20 questions in each section. 

In the ‘Quantitative Reasoning’ segment, there are 2 sections with almost 20 questions each. These are multiple-choice questions focused on ‘quantitative comparisons’ and ‘problem-solving’. This segment also contains few ‘numeric entry’ questions. An on-screen calculator is provided for this segment.

In addition to these 3 segments, there is also an anonymous segment that appears at any stage of the test. 

  • How do I prepare for GRE?

The preparation time for GRE is around 3 months with full-time focused studies. Students should start with the preparation well-in-advance to avoid last-minute panic and failed attempts. A successful GRE attempt requires the candidate to take lots of sample tests, learn short-cut methods to problem-solving and sufficient practice of the test syllabus. 

  • How many times can I take GRE?

You can take the GRE once in every 21 days, and up to five times within a continuous 12-months or 365 days period. The paper-delivered GRE can be taken as often it is offered.

  • How will I come to know about my GRE result?

Your official scores will be available in your ETS (Educational Testing Services) account in approximately 10–15 days from the date of your GRE test.

  • Is GRE required in Canada?

Yes, most top-ranked colleges in Canada ask for a GRE score if you are applying for a masters or a Ph.D course. 

  • How long is GRE score valid?

GRE score is valid for 5 years from the date of your test.

  • What is the time allotment for GRE test?

The computerized GRE test is conducted for three hours and 45 minutes.

  • What score is a good GRE score?
A good GRE score completely depends on the university you want to apply to. Every college has different GRE score requirements and cut-off. However, anything above 310 should be a decent GRE score for admission into reputed universities.
