UNIVERSITY OF SCRANTON

Scranton, Pennsylvania is home to a Jesuit-affiliated private university known as the University of Scranton. St. Thomas College was initially established in 1888 by William O'Hara, who later became the first Bishop of Scranton. The college was promoted to the status of a university in 1938 and subsequently given the name The University of Scranton. From the time it was established until 1897, the Diocese of Scranton was in charge of running the institution. The Lasallian Christian Brothers were in charge of the university's administration from 1888 until 1942, even though ownership of the institution was kept by the Diocese of Scranton. In 1942, the Society of Jesus purchased the university and assumed control of its administration. The university transitioned into an independent institution during the 1960s and is now governed by a lay board of trustees.
