VILLANOVA UNIVERSITY

In Villanova, Pennsylvania, the Order of Saint Augustine oversees Villanova University, a private Catholic research university that is part of the larger Villanova University system. It was established in 1842 by the Augustinian order and given its current name in honour of Saint Thomas of Villanova. The university was founded by the Augustinian order, making it one of just two such schools in the United States. It holds the distinction of being Pennsylvania's oldest Catholic university (The other being Merrimack College). It is categorised as an R2 university, which stands for "Doctoral Universities - High Research Activity." The Augustinian friars of the Province of Saint Thomas of Villanova established the old Saint Augustine's Church in Philadelphia in 1796. In 1811, the Augustinian friars also established the Saint Augustine's Academy, which served as the parish school for the church. The university can trace its origins back to these two institutions. The Augustinian Catholic foundation is still very much a part of the school's identity; the vast majority of students are Catholic, the administration is run by priests, there is a cross on every building, and all first-year students are required to take a course called Augustine and Culture Seminar (ACS).
