Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania is home to the Carnegie Mellon University (often known as CMU), a prestigious private research institution. The Carnegie Institute of Technology and the Mellon Institute of Industrial Research came together to form what is now known as the university as a result of their merger. The predecessor was established in 1900 by Andrew Carnegie as the Carnegie Technical Schools, and it became the Carnegie Institute of Technology in 1912 and began granting four-year degrees. The Dietrich College of Humanities and Social Sciences is the only college at the university that focuses on the humanities and social sciences. The primary campus of the university can be found approximately five miles (eight kilometres) from the central business district of Pittsburgh. In addition, the university has over a dozen degree-granting locations across six continents, including campuses that award degrees in Qatar and Silicon Valley. Carnegie Mellon University is well-known for its contributions to the advancement of research and the development of new areas of academic study.
