Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania's Duquesne University of the Holy Spirit is a private research institution. In October 1878, the Pittsburgh Catholic College of the Holy Ghost, founded by members of the Congregation of the Holy Spirit, welcomed its first 40 students and six faculty members. The college established itself as Pennsylvania's first Catholic university-level school in 1911. It is the sole higher education institution in the world that is Spiritan. It has the name of Michel-Ange Duquesne de Menneville, a New France ruler from the 18th century. Since then, Duquesne has grown to include nearly 9,300 graduate and undergraduate students on a 49-acre (19.8 hectare) campus on a hill in Pittsburgh's Bluff neighbourhood. The institution has twelve schools of study and maintains an affiliate campus in Rome. More than 80 different nationalities are represented at the university, but the majority of students—about 80%—come from Pennsylvania or the nearby area. The NCAA Division I team that Duquesne Dukes represent. In the 1950s, the men's basketball team from Duquesne made two appearances in national championship games and won the NIT title in 1955.
