The main campus of the public research institution known as the University of Central Florida (UCF) is situated in unincorporated Orange County, Florida, east of Orlando and south of Oviedo. In central Florida, UCF also has nine smaller regional campuses. It is a member of Florida's State University System. It now boasts the second-largest student body of any public university in the United States with 70,406 students as of the Fall 2021 semester. With the goal of supplying employees to support the expanding American space programme at the Kennedy Space Center and Cape Canaveral Space Force Station on Florida's Space Coast, UCF was established in 1963 as Florida Technological University and opened its doors in 1968. Florida Tech was renamed the University of Central Florida in 1978 as the school's academic focus broadened to include subjects other than engineering and technology. The NASA Florida Space Grant Consortium is run by UCF, which has deep origins in the space industry. In 2022, there will be more than 70,000 students enrolled, representing 157 nations, all 50 states, and Washington, D.C. The initial enrolment was 1,948 pupils. The majority of students go to classes at the university's main campus, which is located 35 miles (56 km) west of Cape Canaveral and 13 miles (21 km) east of downtown Orlando. At its ten regional campuses throughout Central Florida, the university offers more than 230 degrees through its 13 colleges, including the Health Sciences Campus at Lake Nona Medical City, the Rosen College of Hospitality Management in south Orlando, and the UCF Center for Emerging Media in the city's centre. UCF has conferred more than 346,000 degrees since its foundation, including more than 60,000 graduate and professional degrees. Black and gold are the school's official colours, and the Pegasus emblem "symbolises the university's concept of infinite potential," according to its website. The university's intercollegiate sports teams, the "UCF Knights," play in NCAA Division I in the American Athletic Conference. Their mascot is Knightro.
