In San Diego, California, there is a public land-grant research institution known as the University of California, San Diego (UC San Diego or UCSD). The southernmost of the University of California's 10 campuses, UC San Diego was founded in 1960 close to the already-existing Scripps Institution of Oceanography. It has 33,343 undergraduate students and 9,533 graduate students and provides more than 200 undergraduate and graduate degree programmes. The university sits on 2,178 acres (881 ha) close to the Pacific Ocean coast, with its main campus covering around 1,152 acres (466 ha). According to prestigious college and university rankings, UC San Diego is one of the greatest colleges in the world. Twelve undergraduate, graduate, and professional schools, along with seven residential colleges for undergraduate students, make up UC San Diego. It was the second-most applied-to university in the US in Fall 2021 with over 140,000 applications for undergraduate admissions. At the UC San Diego Medical Center, Hillcrest, Jacobs Medical Center, Moores Cancer Center, Sulpizio Cardiovascular Center, Shiley Eye Institute, Institute for Genomic Medicine, Koman Family Outpatient Pavilion, and various express care and urgent care clinics located throughout San Diego, UC San Diego Health, the city's only academic health system, provides patient care, conducts medical research, and educates future health care professionals. In addition to eight School of Medicine research units, six research centres at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, and two multi-campus projects, the institution runs 19 organised research units. The Salk Institute, the Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute, the Sanford Consortium for Regenerative Medicine, and the Scripps Research Institute are just a few of the regional research institutions with which UC San Diego has close ties. It is listed as belonging to the category "R1: Doctoral Universities - Very High Research Activity." In fiscal year 2019, UC San Diego spent $1.354 billion on research and development, placing it sixth in the US, according to the National Science Foundation. One of the public Ivies in the nation is UC San Diego. Faculty, researchers, and graduates at UC San Diego have also been awarded three Fields Medals, eight National Medals of Science, eight MacArthur Fellowships, and three Pulitzer Prizes, in addition to 27 Nobel Prizes. Additionally, 70 members of the National Academy of Sciences, 45 members of the Institute of Medicine, and 29 members of the present faculty have been elected to the National Academy of Engineering, as well as 110 members of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
