Saint Paul, Minnesota is home to the prestigious private Catholic liberal arts institution known as St. Catherine University (St. Kate's). Until 2009, it was known as the College of St. Catherine. When it was founded, it was one of the first educational institutions in the Midwestern United States that catered solely to the educational needs of women. Today, St. Kate's provides bachelor degrees for women, in addition to graduate programmes for both women and men, as well as associate degree programmes. The university enrols approximately 5,000 new students each year on average. It focuses on recruiting and enrolling students from underrepresented groups as well as students of non-traditional ages. The programme that is currently known as College for Adults at St. Catherine's College was the first of its kind in the Upper Midwest and the second of its kind in the United States. St. Kate's was also the first private institution in the US to undertake a campaign to attract, welcome, and retain Hmong students. As a result, it now has one of the highest numbers of Hmong scholars of any college or university in the United States.
