ABOUT
Private Jesuit university Saint Joseph's University (SJU or St. Joe's) is located in Lower Merion and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The Society of Jesus created the university in 1851 as Saint Joseph's College. One of the 28 institutions that make up the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities, Saint Joseph's is the seventh-oldest Jesuit university in the country. It bears the name of Saint Joseph, who was Jesus' biological father. Saint Joseph's University and University of the Sciences amalgamated on June 1, 2022. The university's origins may be traced back to February 1821, when 68 apothecaries gathered in Philadelphia's Carpenters' Hall to enhance scientific standards and create programmes to educate apprentices and students more effectively. In order to further their profession and "protect the drug market from the entry of fake, adulterated, degraded or other malicious items, which are too frequently forced into it," they organised their new society through a constitution. It became the first higher education institution in the US to focus exclusively on pharmacy almost immediately, with classes starting. The college started issuing the first academic pharmacy journal in the country in 1825. Through the Erivan K. Haub School of Business, the College of Arts and Sciences, and the School of Health Studies and Education, Saint Joseph's University teaches about 9,200 undergraduate, graduate, and doctorate students annually. Over 60 undergraduate majors, 53 graduate programmes, 12 special study choices, 28 study abroad programmes, a co-op programme, a dual degree programme with Thomas Jefferson University, and an Ed.D. in Educational Leadership are all available at the university. It has 17 centres and institutes, including the Pedro Arrupe Center for Business Ethics and the Kinney Center for Autism Education & Support. The NCAA Division I St. Joe's Hawks athletic teams compete in both Philadelphia's Big 5 and the Atlantic-10 Conference. Crimson and grey are the university's official colours. The Hawk, the school mascot, never stops flapping its wings when wearing a costume.
