The Minnesota State University, Mankato, also known simply as Minnesota State, is a public university that is located in Mankato, Minnesota. The university goes by the abbreviations MSU and MNSU. First opened in 1858 as the Second State Normal School, the institution moved to its current location in Mankato in 1866 and became known as the Mankato Normal School the following year, in 1868. It was founded in 1851, making it the second-oldest institution in the system of Minnesota State Colleges and Universities. Additionally, it is the second largest university in the state and boasts more than 123,000 living alumni from all over the world. It is known as the flagship of the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities system because it is the state university that offers the most comprehensive curriculum of the seven that make up the system. Due to the fact that it contributes more than 781 million dollars to the economy of Minnesota on an annual basis, it is an important component of the economy of Southern Minnesota as well as the state. There are 130 undergraduate programmes of study, 75 graduate programmes, and 4 doctoral programmes available at Minnesota State University.
