The primary campus of Florida International Institution, also known as FIU, is located in Miami-Dade County. FIU is a public research university. The institution was established in 1965, but it wasn't until 1972 that it started accepting new pupils. Due to its rapid expansion, Florida International University (FIU) is now the third-largest university in the state of Florida and the fifth-largest in the United States. The State University System of Florida includes Florida International University as a member institution. It was ranked first in performance funding by the Florida Board of Governors in 2021 and had more over $246 million in research expenditures during that year. The university is categorised as a "R1: Doctoral University – Very high research activity," according to the Carnegie Classification. More than 200 different academic programmes are available to students at FIU, which is comprised of 11 colleges, more than 40 centres, facilities, labs, and institutions. The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools has conferred its accreditation upon the university (SACS). The FIU Panthers are the name of the university's intercollegiate athletic teams, and they compete in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I in the Conference USA (C-USA). The varsity sports teams at FIU have won a total of five athletic championships, while numerous individual Panther athletes have won a variety of national championships at the NCAA level. Since 2022, Kenneth A. Jessell has been serving as Interim President of Florida International University (FIU).
