The Northside of Dublin, Ireland is home to the campus of Dublin City University, a prestigious educational institution. Established in 1975 as the National Institute for Higher Education, Dublin, it welcomed its first students in 1980 and was granted university status in September 1989, along with the National Institute for Higher Education, Limerick, which is now known as the University of Limerick, as a result of a statute. In September of 2016, Dublin City University (DCU) successfully completed the process of incorporating four additional educational institutions located in Dublin. These institutions were the Church of Ireland College of Education, All Hallows College, Mater Dei Institute of Education, and St. Patrick's College. The institution will have 17,400 students and more than 80,000 graduates by the year 2020. In addition, there are approximately 1,200 students participating in online distance education through the university's DCU Connected platform. In 2019, there were a total of 1,690 staff members. John Bruton, a former Taoiseach, and Edward De Bono, a "thinking" Guru, are two notable examples of the faculty members at this institution. Early in 2004, Bruton agreed to take a job as an adjunct faculty member at the School of Law and Government, and in the middle of 2005, De Bono agreed to take a post as an adjunct professor at the institution. Dr. Danny O'Hare, who had been a part of the organisation since its inception, served as its first president and remained in that role until his retirement in 1999. After a brief period of administration by an acting president, Professor Albert Pratt, Professor Ferdinand von Prondzynski was appointed and continued as president for the whole ten years of his term, which concluded in July of 2010. The subsequent appointment was made of Professor Brian MacCraith, who will be succeeded in 2020 by Professor Daire Keogh, who is the current president.
