ABOUT
In the census-designated place of Stanford, California, close to the city of Palo Alto, is where Stanford University, formally Leland Stanford Junior University, is situated. Over 17,000 students are enrolled on the campus, which is one of the biggest in the country at 8,180 acres (3,310 hectares). One of the best universities in the world is Stanford. Leland and Jane Stanford established Stanford in 1885 in honour of their only child, Leland Stanford Jr., who had passed away from typhoid disease at the age of 15 the year before. Former California governor and U.S. senator Leland Stanford amassed wealth as a railroad magnate. On October 1, 1891, the coeducational, nondenominational university welcomed its first pupils. Leland Stanford died in 1893, and Stanford University struggled financially again following the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, which severely devastated much of the campus. Frederick Terman, the provost, encouraged faculty members and recent graduates to start their own businesses after World War II in order to create a self-sufficient local economy in what would come to be known as Silicon Valley. The institution is structured around seven schools on the same campus, including four professional schools that concentrate on graduate programmes in law, medicine, education, and business, as well as three schools with 40 academic departments for undergraduate students. The Hoover Institution, a public policy think tank, is also housed at the university. The university is one of two private colleges in the Division I FBS Pac-12 Conference, and students play in 36 varsity sports there. More than any other university, Stanford had won 131 NCAA team titles as of May 26, 2022. Stanford also received the NACDA Directors' Cup for 25 straight years, starting in 1994-1995. A minimum of 296 Olympic medals, including 150 gold and 79 silver, had been won by Stanford students and alumni by the year 2021. 85 Nobel laureates, 29 Turing Award winners, and 8 Fields Medalists have ties to Stanford as either students, graduates, teachers, or employees as of April 2021. Additionally, Stanford is one of the best colleges for attracting finance for start-ups and is renowned for its entrepreneurship. Many businesses were started by Stanford alumni, and as of 2011, these businesses collectively generated more than $2.7 trillion in yearly sales and 5.4 million employees, which is roughly equivalent to the 7th largest economy in the world (as of 2020). 17 astronauts, 74 active billionaires, and one US president (Herbert Hoover) all attended Stanford University. Additionally, it is a major producer of Fulbright Scholars, Marshall Scholars, Rhodes Scholars, and US Congress members.
