In the American state of Maine, Portland, Gorham, and Lewiston are the campuses of the public institution known as the University of Southern Maine (USM). It is the University of Maine System's most southern campus. Gorham Normal School and Portland University, two different state universities, were its original founders. In order to improve the efficiency of the public university system in Maine, the two institutions—later known as Gorham State College and the University of Maine at Portland—were amalgamated in 1970. Later, in 1988, the Lewiston campus was added. The USM School of Business, the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, the Bio Sciences Research Institute, the Edmund Muskie School of Public Service, and the Osher Map Library are all located on the Portland Campus. The School of Education and Human Development and the School of Music are located on the Gorham campus, which is substantially more residential. USM had 1,750 graduate students and 5,950 undergraduate students as of 2021, for a student-faculty ratio of 13:3.
