MAINE MARITIME ACADEMY

Maine Nautical Academy (Maine Maritime or MMA) is a public college in Castine, Maine, that focuses on maritime instruction. On March 21, 1941, the 90th Maine Legislature created the academy. Unlike federal service academies, this state school does not require a congressional referral to attend. Students are not required to travel to sea or join the military after graduation, and a considerable percentage of the graduating class chooses to work on land, generally in maritime-related industries or in the power production industry. Maine Maritime Academy is one of only two non-federal maritime training institutes in the US that has a Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps (NROTC) unit. The New England Commission of Higher Education is the college's accrediting body.
