UNIVERSITY OF NEBRASKA - LINCOLN

Lincoln, Nebraska is home to the public land-grant research institution known as the University of Nebraska–Lincoln (sometimes written as Nebraska, NU, or UNL). The Morrill Act of 1862 established the University of Nebraska in 1869, and the school was known as the University of Nebraska until 1968, when it merged with the Municipal University of Omaha to form the University of Nebraska system. The school was chartered by the Nebraska Legislature in that year. It was established in the early years of the state's educational system and holds the distinction of being the state's oldest university. Since 1871, the institution has been overseen by the Board of Regents, whose members serve staggered periods of six years and are elected at the district level.
