UNIVERSITY OF CANTERBURY

The Institution of Canterbury is a public research university with its headquarters in Christchurch, New Zealand (in Maori, Te Whare Wnanga o Waitaha; postnominal abbreviation Cantuar. or Cant. for Cantuariensis, the Latin name for Canterbury). The University of New Zealand's first constituent institution, Canterbury College, was established in 1873. After the Institution of Otago, which was established just four years earlier in 1869, it is the second-oldest university in New Zealand. Its initial site was located in Christchurch Central City, but in 1961 it changed its status to an independent university and started vacating the neo-gothic structures that had been converted into the Christchurch Arts Centre. The university now operates its main campus in the Christchurch neighborhood of Ilam after the relocation was finished on May 1st, 1975.
