ABOUT
In San Francisco, California, there is a public law school called the University of California, Hastings College of the Law (UC Hastings). UC Hastings was the first law school created by Serranus Clinton Hastings and one of the first law schools established in California and the Western United States. It was founded in 1878. Despite being a member of the University of California, the Regents of the University of California do not actively oversee UC Hastings. As one of the few well-known university-affiliated law schools in the country, UC Hastings does not share a campus with the undergraduate or other graduate programmes of the university. In California, especially in the San Francisco Bay Area, the law school boasts a sizable alumni community that includes general counsels, partners in law firms, lawmakers, judges, and business leaders. Some notable alumni include Todd Machtmes, the general counsel of Salesforce, Alexander Francis Morrison, the founding member of the international law firm Morrison & Foerster, William H. Orrick, the founding member of the international law firm Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe, and Kamala D. Harris, the 49th vice president of the United States. Due to the involvement of the institution's namesake, S. C. Hastings, in the murder and dispossession of the Yuki people in the 1850s, the UC Hastings Board of Directors decided to change the institution's name in November 2021.
