It was established in 2005 as University College for the Creative Arts at Canterbury, Epsom, Farnham, Maidstone, and Rochester after the Surrey Institute of Art & Design, which already had degree-awarding status, merged with the Kent Institute of Art and Design. Both constituent schools had been formed by merging the local art schools in Kent and Surrey, respectively. In 2008, it was elevated to the rank of a university, and the same year, the name was modified to its current form. In 2016, it became a part of the Open College of the Arts after the two institutions joined.
