Milwaukee, Wisconsin is home to Mount Mary University, a Roman Catholic women's institution of higher education that is private. The School Sisters of Notre Dame established this Catholic university for women in Wisconsin in 1913. It was the state's first four-year, degree-granting institution of higher learning in the Catholic tradition. At the present time, the university offers undergraduate programmes that are exclusive to women and graduate programmes that are open to both men and women. The university has a total of eight master's degree programmes and four doctoral degree programmes in addition to its nearly 1,500 undergraduate students and more than thirty academic majors that lead to a bachelor's degree. In addition to that, there are post-certificate bachelor's programmes available. The Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools has granted Mount Mary University's application for accreditation.
