Butte, Montana is home to Montana Technological University, more commonly referred to as Montana Tech. This school is a public institution. The Montana State School of Mines was the institution's original name, but in 1994 it merged with the University of Montana to become the University of Montana. Following a number of name changes, in 2017 the Board of Regents for the Montana University System voted to designate Montana Tech as one of the Special Focus Four-Year Universities. This is the only designation of its kind within the Montana University System. The previous name of the institution, which was Montana Tech of the University of Montana, was changed to Montana Technological University in 2018. This was done to acknowledge the new designation as well as the increased autonomy that came with it. The fields of engineering, applied science, and health science are where Montana Tech places its primary emphasis. Nearly 2,700 students were enrolled at Montana Tech during the fall 2017 semester, and the school possessed 13 campus buildings. In addition to 45 undergraduate degrees, Montana Tech offers 15 minors, 11 certification degrees, and 10 pre-professional career programmes. In addition, Montana Tech is home to 21 graduate degree programmes as well as doctoral degree courses in the fields of Earth Science and Engineering as well as Materials Science and Engineering.
