MONTANA STATE UNIVERSITY NORTHERN

Havre, Montana is home to a public university known as Montana State University–Northern, also referred to simply as Northern. It was formerly known as Northern Montana College before the state of Montana's public university system was reorganised in 1994. Now, the institution is a part of the Montana University System. It has a total operating budget of $12.54 million for the current fiscal year (2007). Although the Northern Montana Agricultural and Manual Training School was approved to be established by the Montana State Legislature in 1913, no money was ever actually appropriated to make the school a reality. The school was located at Fort Assiniboine, which is six miles southwest of Havre. In 1927, the state legislature made changes to their initial act in order to include specific academic disciplines. Two years later, in 1929, the legislature approved funding in order to establish the college as a branch of the University of Montana (later renamed the Montana University System). Northern Montana College first welcomed students in September 1929, when it was temporarily housed in the Havre High School building. The college relocated to its current location in 1932.
