ABOUT

Kean University is located in the New Jersey towns of Union and Hillside. It is a part of the public higher education system in the state of New Jersey. Newark Normal School, which would later become Kean University, was established in Newark, New Jersey, in 1855. In 1937, the institution that had been founded initially for the exclusive purpose of functioning as a college for the education of teachers changed its name to the New Jersey State Teachers College. In 1958, as a result of a post-war boom in the number of students and increasing demands for a more comprehensive curriculum, the college moved from its previous location in Newark to its current location in Union Township, which is also the location of Liberty Hall, the ancestral home of the Kean family. Newark State College is a comprehensive institution that offers a wide variety of academic programmes and majors. It is located on the historic Livingston-Kean Estate, which includes the entire Liberty Hall acreage, the historic James Townley House, and Kean Hall, which historically served as a political meeting place and housed the library of United States Senator Hamilton Fish Kean. The school changed its name to Newark State College after moving to the new location. Kean College of New Jersey was rechristened Kean College of New Jersey in 1973. On September 26, 1997, the school was granted university status and changed its name to Kean University of New Jersey. As a result of its subsequent expansion, Kean University is now the third biggest institution of higher education in the state of New Jersey. The university is currently composed of the Nathan Weiss Graduate College in addition to its five undergraduate colleges. In addition, Kean University is home to a number of research institutions, the most notable of which include the New Jersey Center for Science, Technology, and Mathematics, the Kean University Human Rights Institute, the Holocaust Resource Center, the Wynona Moore Lipman Ethnic Studies Center, and Liberty Hall. All of these institutions are located on the Kean University campus. In recent years, Kean University has expanded to include a satellite campus in Toms River, New Jersey as well as a site in the Skylands of New Jersey. Additionally, the university has a campus in Wenzhou, China.
