In Lakewood Township, New Jersey, there is a private Roman Catholic university known as Georgian Court University (GCU or Georgian Court). The university, established in 1908 by the Sisters of Mercy, has around 1,500 undergraduate and close to 600 graduate students. After more than a century as a women's college, the institution changed its name to a university in 2004 and started accepting male students in 1994. The university emphasises its purpose of Mercy, which encompasses respect, justice, integrity, compassion, and service, while being open to students of all religions. The main campus in Lakewood was named a National Historic Landmark in 1985 and entered the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.
