Mount Pleasant, Iowa is home to the private college that is known as Iowa Wesleyan University. It was the first college or university in Iowa to admit students of both sexes, making it the oldest institution of its kind west of the Mississippi River. The United Methodist Church is the organization's primary sponsor and benefactor. In 1842, it was established as the Mount Pleasant Literary Institute. Between the years 1843 and 1855, it was known as the Mount Pleasant Collegiate Institute. Between the years 1855 and 1912, it was known as Iowa Wesleyan University. Between the years 1912 and 2015, it was known as Iowa Wesleyan College. In 2015, the institution was officially rechristened as Iowa Wesleyan University. The Old Main Building and the Harlan-Lincoln House are both recognised by the National Register of Historic Places as important historic resources on the campus. The latter building, which served as Robert Todd Lincoln's vacation house for many years, is currently used as a museum where visitors may view numerous relics that belonged to the Harlan and Lincoln families.
