BUENA VISTA UNIVERSITY

The city of Storm Lake, Iowa is home to the Buena Vista University, a private institution of higher education. It was established in 1891 as Buena Vista College, and its connection to the Presbyterian Church dates back to that year. The 60-acre (240,000 m2) campus of the university is located on the shores of Storm Lake, which is a natural lake that covers 3,200 acres (13 km2) in total area. When it first opened its doors, the college was located in the Storm Lake Opera House; however, it was only there for a single academic year. The college's first building, known as Old Main, first opened its doors to students and faculty in 1892 and remained in use until it was destroyed by fire in 1956. The college was expanded through the 1950s and 1960s through the completion of significant building projects, which resulted in the establishment of three dorms, a library, and several classroom buildings. The primary campus of Buena Vista University provides students with a residential college experience that spans all four years of their education and classes in 42 different majors. As part of the Graduate & Professional Studies programme, students who are working adults or graduate students can attend classes at one of seventeen additional locations across the state of Iowa or online.
