Sault Ste. Marie is home to the primary campus of Algoma University, which is also referred to simply as Algoma or Algoma U. Algoma University is a public institution of higher education. Marie, Ontario, Canada. Algoma University is a post-secondary university that specialises in liberal arts, sciences, management, and professional degree programmes. The institution places a particular emphasis on meeting the requirements of Northern Ontario and places a strong emphasis on student learning and teaching. Algoma University has a unique aim to create and nurture cross-cultural learning opportunities between Aboriginal populations and other communities. The university is located on the grounds of the former Shingwauk Indian Residential School. Satellite programming is also available in Brampton and Timmins, both of which are located in Ontario. From the time it opened its doors in 1965 until the 18th of June in 2008, Algoma University was formally known as Algoma University College. It was a college that was associated with Laurentian University in Sudbury. The Algoma University Act of 2008 is the piece of law that makes this all possible.
