The University of Sussex is a public research university that can be found in Falmer, which is located in East Sussex, England. Although the majority of the university is contained within the city limits of Brighton and Hove, it also extends into the Lewes District on the city's eastern outskirts. Its substantial campus location is approximately 5.5 kilometres (3.4 miles) from the heart of Brighton and is encircled on all sides by the South Downs National Park. The university was a founding member of the 1994 Group of research-intensive universities and was awarded its Royal Charter in August 1961, making it the first of its generation to be referred to as a plate glass university. More than one third of its students are enrolled in postgraduate programmes, and roughly one third of the institution's faculty and employees are not originally from the United Kingdom. There are roughly 20,000 students at Sussex, with around one third of them coming from other countries. Additionally, there are over 1,000 faculty members at Sussex, representing over 140 different nations. The organisation had an annual income of £319.6 million during the 2019–20 fiscal year, while its expenses totaled £282 million.
