ABOUT

Publicly funded research is conducted at the University of Glasgow, which is located in Glasgow, Scotland. It is one of Scotland's four ancient universities and the fourth-oldest institution in the English-speaking world. It was established in 1451 by a papal bull and is known as the University of St. Andrews. During the 18th century, the university was one of several institutions that contributed to the Scottish Enlightenment. Other contributing institutions included the universities of Edinburgh, Aberdeen, and St. Andrews. Initially, the majority of Glasgow University's students came from affluent families, as was typical of universities established in the pre-modern era. However, in the 19th century, Glasgow established itself as a leader in the field of higher education in Great Britain by catering to the requirements of students coming from the expanding urban and commercial middle class. All of these students received a valuable service from Glasgow University in the form of preparation for various professions, including the ministry, medicine, teaching, and civil service. Additionally, it prepared a smaller number of people, but an increasing number overall, for jobs in science and engineering. The organisation had an annual income of £809.4 million for the fiscal year 2020–21, with £173.3 million coming from research grants and contracts. The institution's expenditures totaled £693.1 million during that same time period. Universitas 21, the Russell Group[8, and the Guild of European Research-Intensive Universities are all organisations in which it participates.
