In Anchorage, Alaska, there is a public institution called the University of Alaska Anchorage (UAA). In Southcentral Alaska, UAA also oversees the four community colleges at Kenai Peninsula College, Kodiak College, Matanuska-Susitna College, and Prince William Sound College. At UAA, there are currently about 15,000 undergraduate, graduate, and professional students enrolled between the community campuses and the main Anchorage campus. It is both the largest university in the University of Alaska System and the largest higher education institution in Alaska. UAA is listed under the category of public Master's Colleges & Universities: Larger Programs by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, with a special designation for Community Engagement. The main campus of UAA is situated in the University-Medical District, four miles (6.4 km) southeast of the city's centre, next to Providence Alaska Medical Center, Alaska Pacific University, and the Alaska Native Medical Center. The Arbor Day Foundation has designated UAA as a Tree Campus USA for ten years running. It is located near Goose Lake Park, tucked away among a sizable greenbelt (2010-2019). An elevated, indoor "spine" that runs east to west from Rasmuson Hall, through the student union, across UAA Drive (the busier of the two north-south roads that pass through the campus), and finally inside the Consortium Library connects much of the campus. The campus is also connected by a network of paved, outdoor trails. The College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Business and Public Policy, the Community and Technical College, the College of Engineering, and the College of Health make up UAA's five academic and research divisions on the Anchorage campus. Through its Graduate Division, UAA offers master's degrees, graduate certifications, and the option to finish several PhD programmes through partner universities. The university has doctoral degrees to award as of May 2012. The Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities has accredited UAA. The Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation revoked the School of Education at UAA's accreditation in 2019. (CAEP). The School of Education's Advanced Preparation programme will receive CAEP accreditation in August 2021.
