The Ulster Institution, sometimes known as the University of Ulster, is a public university with multiple campuses that may be found across Northern Ireland. It is frequently and informally referred to as Ulster, and the abbreviation UU is also commonly used to refer to it. It is the largest university in Northern Ireland and the second-largest university on the island of Ireland, behind only the National University of Ireland, which is located in the capital of the Republic of Ireland. It was originally founded in 1968 as the New University of Ulster, and in 1984 it merged with Ulster Polytechnic, bringing all four of its Northern Irish campuses together under the banner of the University of Ulster. In 1984, the university merged its four separate campuses, which were located in Belfast, Coleraine, Derry (Magee College), and Jordanstown respectively. The institution offers a significant amount of courses that may be completed online, in addition to having campuses in both London and Birmingham. The institution underwent a rebranding effort in October 2014, changing its name to Ulster University and updating its visual identity in the process. However, its official name did not change. Over ninety-two percent of graduates are either employed or enrolled in additional education six months after graduation, making it one of the universities in the UK with the greatest employment and further education rates. The university is affiliated with numerous prestigious academic organisations, including Universities Ireland and Universities UK, in addition to the Association of Commonwealth Universities and the European University Association.
